ABOUT DRAMATIX
Dramatix New Zealand Ltd was established in 2000, initially a theatre company to produce locally written original New Zealand theatre, Dramatix Ltd branched out to fill niche gaps in the Nelson theatre scene, providing farces and comedies in the Nelson Suburban Club and café theatre for more edgy, dramatic works as well as hosting and performing in National One Act Play Competitions.
Dramatix has won many National awards for the writing, performance and technical aspects of our works and have toured regularly, taking our own brand of theatre into the smaller centres, which are not on the tour itineraries of professional companies.
Our aim has always been to bring live, local theatre to as wide a range of the community as we can. In our quest for this, we never charge more than $15 for an adult ticket – less whenever we can. Dramatix feels that theatre should be there for everyone to access whether they are audience member, performer or crew.
We are also alone in never charging a Membership Fee and in this way we have made performance theatre available to a large number of young – and older – people who could not afford the experience if a fee was expected and as all too many schools now have a ‘No Fee. No Play’ attitude, this is further prohibiting sporting and performance opportunities for those on low incomes.

Since 2000 and the start of the Dramatix Theatre Family, we realised we needed a branch within our company to cater exclusively for the development and production of original works, a fund for skill development by the way of workshops, an umbrella system for our Youth and Junior groups, a base to develop Community Theatre (ie) the ANZAC Commemorative Weekend event, representation of Nelson at the National One Act play Festival competition and more.
And thus, after several years of idea and philosophy development, the Dramatix Theatre Development Trust was born.
